The Fraunhofer Microelectronics Group is one of the leading international research and development providers for microelectronics and smart systems integration. As part of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, it pools the extensive experience and expertise of the more than 3,000 scientists in the member institutes. Since 1996, the group has been operating worldwide in the research, development, production and application of micro and nano power electronics and microsystems technology.
With its competencies in the areas of microelectronics and smart systems integration, it builds a bridge between application-oriented basic research and product development along the entire value chain in the business units:
- Ambient Assisted Living, Health and Well-being – electronic assistance for individual requirements
- Energy Efficient Systems – moving towards an »All Electric Society«
- Mobility and Urbanization – quality of life in urban areas
- Smart Living – living and working in the »knowledge society«
Since the beginning of 2014, its strategy focuses on the cross-institutional competencies of the application-oriented business units which supply the technologies that are required to realize the lead product ideas:
- design of smart systems
- semiconductor-based technologies
- power electronics and system technology for energy supply
- sensors and sensor systems
- system integration technologies
- quality and reliability
- high frequency and telecommunications
The pooling of the core competencies of the 16 member institutes paves the way for industry-specific, integrated and tailor-made system developments based on More Moore as well as More than Moore technologies.
The activities of the group focus on achieving a market-oriented balance between short-term, development-oriented contract research for small and medium-sized enterprises as well as large-scale industry and internal, strategic preliminary research over a longer period.
