Fraunhofer Group for Defense and Security
The Fraunhofer Defense and Security Group was established in 2002 and is currently led by Prof. Jürgen Beyerer, director of Fraunhofer IOSB. The total annual budget of the institutes within the group is approx. € 415 million. Over 3,600 employees work for the 9 institutes in the group.
The group has two central objectives:
- the research and development of technical solutions and systems to protect life and safeguard infrastructures,
- research for public security provision in the defense area
With obligations to the Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the Federal Ministry of Defense, the group has now established itself as a driving force across the entire defense and security area. At a European level, the group is also a central player and paves the way for intensive networking and promising joint research activities. With its pioneering spirit and outstanding achievements, the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft makes an important contribution to the future strategic orientation of the European Security and Defense Programme.
The 10 member institutes of the group create intelligent and comprehensive solutions to protect society against potential threats – whether caused by humans or by nature. Serving as an excellence center for the safeguarding of infrastructures, human protection as well as crisis management and monitoring, the group develops leading-edge technology and sophisticated concepts with an equal focus on civil security and defense.

The Fraunhofer Microelectronics Group is one of the leading international research and development providers for microelectronics and smart systems integration. As part of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, it pools the extensive experience and expertise of the more than 3,000 scientists in the member institutes. Since 1996, the group has been operating worldwide in the research, development, production and application of micro and nano power electronics and microsystems technology.
With its competencies in the areas of microelectronics and smart systems integration, it builds a bridge between application-oriented basic research and product development along the entire value chain in the business units:
- Ambient Assisted Living, Health and Well-being – electronic assistance for individual requirements

Fraunhofer Vision Alliance
The Fraunhofer Vision Alliance pools the expertise of the Fraunhofer Institutes in the fields of machine vision, image processing and optical measurement and testing techniques. The cooperation within a network facilitates the early identification of market requirements and enables the joint addressing of technological challenges.
With a clear focus on applied research, the network pursues the objective of making new developments accessible under industrial conditions. Standard and specially designed cameras, as well as infrared, X-ray or radar sensors are used for imaging. On request, we will provide complete solutions including automated handling systems. These abilities are further complimented by the close cooperation with Vision partners from industry and science.
In addition, Fraunhofer Vision conceives and organizes technology conferences and training workshops on current issues, as well as marketing and PR activities, trade fair presentations and technical publications.
The Central Office of the Fraunhofer Vision Alliance in Erlangen serves as a contact point and offers competent advice on all questions to interested parties and potential customers.

The Fraunhofer Space Alliance brings together 15 institutes that conduct applied research in the field of industrial space technology.
Space technology is one of the key technologies in a modern industrialized society. Weather forecasts, navigation, real-time transmission for satellite TV or global Internet access – space industry applications and services have become an indispensable part of daily life.
In the Space Alliance, the institutes pool their technological expertise to provide the space industry and funding agencies such as the European Space Agency (ESA) and the European Commission with a central contact. Fraunhofer acts as a systems provider, developing a wide range of top-quality components, integrating them into an overall system and delivering that system to the customer. The sheer technological variety of the participating institutes enables the Fraunhofer Space Alliance to offer its customers a unique range of services.

Fraunhofer Transport Alliance
The Fraunhofer Transport Alliance develops adequate technical and conceptual solutions for the public and industry partners and puts transport-related research solutions into practice. It combines the specific and traffic-related expertise of several Fraunhofer institutes and research units in order to be capable of offering comprehensive system-related expertise.
The mobility of people and goods has become indispensable for the economy and society.This constantly implies new challenges for science. Areas of research range from the development of vehicles to transport management, from new requirements of safety and security to efficient logistics processes, from special wishes regarding design to lightweight construction concepts. The Fraunhofer institutes face up to these tasks. Innovative contributions are developed to make mobility safer, more efficient and more cost-efficient. These competencies are grouped within the Fraunhofer Transport Alliance.
The objective of the Fraunhofer Transport Alliance is to represent the business area »transportation and traffic« within the Fraunhofer Gesellschaft. Therefore, it is the main address for all questions related to transport research.
