Joint chair for Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft and University of Siegen
Inaugural lecture of Professor Dr.-Ing. Joachim Ender
Since mid-December 2011, Professor Dr.-Ing. Joachim Ender holds a chair for High Frequency Sensors and Radar Techniques at the University of Siegen. At the same time, he is the director of the Fraunhofer Institute for High Frequency Physics and Radar Techniques FHR in Wachtberg near Bonn. Professor Ender gave his inaugural lecture at the University of Siegen on 15 February 2012.
The prorector for research and junior researchers, Professor Dr.-Ing. Peter Haring Bolivar, greeted the guests with the words "This is a very gratifying event" and expressed the hope that this first joint chair between the university and a major research center would form the basis for further cooperation. In this context, the prorector also indicated that the threefold increased - in third-party funding achieved by the University of Siegen in the last three years clearly reflected the dynamic development in the research area.
With this chair for high-frequency sensors and radar techniques, which was created and occupied in cooperation with the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Siegen with its Center for Sensor Systems (ZESS) and the Fraunhofer Institute for High Frequency Physics and Radar Techniques FHR are further intensifying their long and successful collaboration (as in, for example, the NRW research school MOSES). In particular, the know-how and research infrastructure in the areas of radar sensors and imaging radar techniques should be combined for remote surveillance and environmental exploration as new image and information acquisition methods must be researched and developed to market maturity.
Under the slogan "Creating a humane future", the University of Siegen has adopted an interdisciplinary approach that aims to combine basic and applied research in close cooperation with renowned research centers in Germany and abroad. Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, the largest organization for applied research in Europe, is a strong partner. It carries out internationally networked applied research which is both of direct use to industry and of benefit to society.
